Self Portrait #7: Cajon

Self Portrait #7: Cajon

This is the 7th installment of the Self Portraits Series. The cajon is a very important instrument to me. I started playing it in NYC after I saw a friend of mine play it at a concert. I was drawn to the simplicity of it. The compactness of it, yet the complex sound and groove that it was capable of. It is the only instrument I have ever fully taught myself and it’s the only instrument I’ve ever learned without knowing what it was supposed to sound like. There was something that was very special about that relationship. The organic nature of learning how I wanted to play this instrument was a really fun process… so here is an improvisation of me playing my Classic Cajon made by Out of The Drawer Percussion! They have been such a great company to partner with. If you like high quality percussion products that are made by hand (from reclaimed wood), right here in the USA, go check them out!

Thanks to Cass Jewell for his stellar work on the audio and video as, thank you to Kev Abrams for the illustration!
